Save the Lupines Oct. 1 in SF
The California Garden Club statewide organization is calling all green thumbs to assist with transplanting lupines this Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Fort Funston Nursery in San Francisco.
The effort is part of "Project: Mission Blue," sponsored by the California Garden Club for the past five years. This project works to save the endangered Mission blue butterfly by growing and planting its lupine host plant.
"We have had a surprisingly high success rate
germinating our summer lupines, Lupinus formosus, for the project. These finicky plants need to be transplanted right away, so we need your help!" said Price Sheppy, Marin Community Program Manager at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservency.
These plants will be planted later at Milagra Ridge in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, where they will increase the habitat for the endangered Mission blue butterfly.
Details and directions will be provided when you sign up. Please make sure you register for the volunteer day before attending. Snacks will be provided!
Windsor Garden Club President Cindy Fenton is encouraging Sonoma County gardeners to spend a day in San Francisco to help the lupines along. And bring a friend!
